Things to Do Post-Operatively
Do
Read your pre-operative information packet and ask questions
Keep all scheduled appointments
Perform exercises to prevent blood clots
Keep a pillow between your legs when turning on either side after hip replacement
Keep your toes pointed up when lying on your back after hip replacement
Keep your knees below the level of your hips when sitting after total hip replacement
Avoid low toilets, low chairs and couches and soft chairs and couches after total hip replacement
Drink plenty of fluids
Eat a well-balanced diet to aid in tissue healing
Take your medication as directed
Eat before taking your pain medication
Use ice packs to reduce pain and swelling
Remove scatter rugs, cords and clutter to prevent falls
Use walker, cane or crutches as taught and directed for weight-bearing
Keep your toes pointed forward when sitting, standing or walking after total hip replacement
Keep frequently used items at waist level
Perform exercises you are taught by physical therapy
Utilize equipment such as CPM (continuous passive motion machine) as directed after total knee replacement
Use assistive devices such as reachers or sock aids after total hip replacement
Things Not to Do Post-Operatively
Don’t
Cross your ankles or legs when sitting, standing, or lying down after hip replacement surgery
Pick up anything or reach below your knees after total hip replacement
Bend your hip more than a 90 degree angle (right angle) after total hip replacement
Sit in a bathtub until given permission
Allow your pets to cause you to stumble and fall in their excitement to see you
Exceed weight bearing limits if applicable
