Dr. Springer earned his Bachelor of Science in biology at Lynchburg College in Virginia and his Doctor of Medicine at the Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, West Virginia. He then completed his residency, specializing in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and his fellowship in adult reconstruction of the hip and knee at the Harvard School of Medicine/Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

He is a recipient of many academic, leadership and professional awards, including the Leonard Marmor Surgical Arthritis Foundation Award, the H.A. Peterson Scholarly Writing Award and the Edward Henderson Award for Excellence in Medical Research Writing.  He has been recognized as an "Emerging Leader in the Field of Orthopaedic Surgery" by the American Orthopaedic Association and has published several peer reviewed research articles and authored several book chapters on hip and knee replacement.

Most recently, Dr. Springer was chosen as one of the four international recipients of the 2008 John N. Insall Travelling Fellowship.  This annual Fellowship is designed to advance the knowledge of the knee joint in health and disease and includes visits and study at internationally recognized joint replacement and knee surgery centers.

Dr. Springer is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society, the North Carolina Medical Society, the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association and the Southern Orthopaedic Association.

In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons. He also enjoys exercise, golf, travel and history.
