The son of an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Maitra saw firsthand the difference medicine can make in people’s lives. He chose orthopedic surgery as his specialty because it enables him to improve patients’ function and quality of life.

Dr. Maitra joined the physician staff of Charlotte Orthopedic Specialists (now OrthoCarolina) in September 2000. He is a graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry with honors. He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan School of Medicine in Ann Arbor, MI. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Kentucky and was awarded a distinguished fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

His primary clinical interest involves orthopedic sports medicine, particularly shoulder and knee conditions. His secondary interests include both primary joint replacement of the shoulder, hip and knee as well as general orthopedic trauma. Dr. Maitra serves as the head team physician for Belmont Abbey College, the Gastonia Grizzlies collegiate baseball team, and the Gastonia Gargoyles of the North Carolina Rugby Union.  He also serves on the advisory board of the Human Motion Institute of Caromont Health.

Dr. Maitra is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) in both orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), and an active member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).  In 2008, he became one of the first orthopedists in the nation to take and pass the new subspecialty certification exam in orthopedic sports medicine.

Dr. Maitra and his wife, Terra, enjoy raising their two daughters and enjoying the outdoors. He also has a passion for golf, health and fitness and downhill skiing.
