Courtney Sugameli of Clover (S.C) High School has been named OrthoCarolina’s Student Athletic Trainer of the Year.
Sugameli received a $2,000 college scholarship and commemorative plaque at her school’s sports awards ceremony on Monday, May 14.
“Courtney is an outstanding leader,” said Alan Tyson, vice president of sports performance and rehabilitation for OrthoCarolina’s Epicenter for Sports Performance. “As head athletic trainer, she’s been responsible for the day-to-day operation of student trainers as well as the organization of most sports practice and game set-ups.”
In addition to participating in the North Carolina Athletic Training Association Sports Medicine Symposium for Students camp for the past two years, Courtney participated in the sports medicine competition at the South Carolina Health Occupation Students of America 2007 Leadership Conference, where she placed third in the state. Courtney is a volunteer with Friends of Special Athletes, where she helps special needs adults and teenagers expand their skills.
Courtney also is an SAT Scholar, senior class president, a member of the National Honor Society, the Historical Society and International Club, and an A/B honor roll student.
Upon graduation, Courtney would like to attend medical school and become an orthopedic surgeon. She will attend the University of South Carolina in the fall and plans to major in biology or biochemistry.
Graduating student athletic trainers from Mecklenburg and surrounding counties are eligible to apply for OrthoCarolina’s annual Student Athletic Trainer of the Year award. |
